Obituary for Hazel Elaine Thomas

Hazel Elaine Thomas
BANGOR - Hazel Elaine, (Smith) Thomas 93, gently passed away at her home in Bangor, on July 25, 2015 with her loving family by her side. She was born July 18, 1922 in Northeast Harbor, a daughter of Arthur Addison and Mabel Susan (Carter) Smith.

Hazel grew up in Northeast Harbor and attended local schools. She was so talented a basketball player that in the eighth grade she played on the High School varsity team. She was also extremely dedicated to roller skating, She had a lifelong love for the coast, and visited it often through the years. Often, starting at the age of nine, she would borrow a rowboat and row from Northeast Harbor to Southwest Harbor by herself, to visit her grandmother, despite not being able to swim. Her favorite movie star, from her childhood to the day she died, was Shirley Temple.

On May 18, 1940 Hazel married her eternal love, Asbury Francis Thomas, of Levant. Together they raised their family of five children, first in Levant, then Hermon, and finally Bangor, on dairy farms.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, had a deep and abiding faith in her Savior, and a sure and certain expectation of the resurrection. She was a very dedicated member, and served in many voluntary positions in the church throughout her life. Her life-long interest and activity in genealogy stemmed from that association. She was a member for years of the Twin City Club, and enjoyed those activities and all her friends there immensely. She was also a member of the Mayflower Society.

Hazel was predeceased by her husband Asbury, her first child,Madeline, and her six brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son Robert Thomas and wife Carol of Bangor and Florida, son Richard Thomas of Bangor, daughter Linda Wills of Sidney, Ohio, son David Thomas of Portland, sister-in-law Priscilla Smith of Hampden, dear cousins Joline Stanley and daughter Patricia of Sullivan, and many, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins. She loved them all.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call 7-9PM Friday, July 31 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor.
