Obituary for Doris Alice Miller

DORIS G. MILLER

ORONO and AUGUSTA – Doris G. Miller, 97, wife of the late William H. Miller, died peacefully and comfortably April 26, 2017 at an Orono Healthcare Home. She was born May 12, 1919 in Bath, daughter of Thomas A. and Amanda C. (Brunelle) Golden.

She came from a family of nine children. She had six brothers, Forest, Robert, Walter, Ray, Thomas and Paul and two sisters, Jeannette and Mary. She did not have pets when she was young, but when she married, her husband and she always had cats. She was raised in Augusta, attended the Hollowell schools and her favorite class was actually the entire eight grade year with her favorite teacher, Sister May Michael. Her best friend in school was Constance LeVasseur and another best friend, who lived near her, was Madelyn Fitzgerald. Her very first job was as a bookkeeper in a furniture store. Her work week was a six day work week to include Saturday nights.

Her husband was William. They married on November 14, 1939. William passed away in 2003. They lived in Augusta and raised their boys, Robert and William there. She was a proud P.T.A. member as her boys went through school. She was also involved in her Catholic Church group.

She enjoyed playing sports in high school, mostly basketball, volleyball and field hockey. She received the Thomas Hickey Trophy at graduation for her excellence in athletics. It was the first annual presentation of the award. She also was a member of the National Honor Society.

She enjoyed following the Celtics and had been a fan forever! She also enjoyed tennis. Her husband and she used to travel to Canada several times a year. Her favorite trip was when they went to Montreal. She enjoyed some Opera music, Mitch Miller and Bing Crosby. She enjoyed the meals at the Phillips-Strickland House and mostly enjoyed going to dinner and sitting with her friends at mealtime. If stranded on an island, the three things she would want with her would have been a canoe, food and clothing.

Surviving are two sons, William H. Miller and his wife, Mary of Lincoln, NE, Robert A. Miller and his wife, Roxine of Bangor; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and Raye Turcotte, the mother of William’s children.

A Funeral Mass will be held 11am Friday, May 5, 2017 at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor followed by the Rite of Committal at 2:30pm in the Village Cemetery, North Vassalboro.
