Obituary for Janet C. Rourke (Candage)

Janet C.  Rourke (Candage)
Orono – Janet C. Rourke, 84, passed away on October 14, 2017 at Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was born April 4, 1933 in Ellsworth, the daughter of Linwood C. and Ruby (MacDougal) Candage.

Janet was a graduate of Ellsworth High School and went to Burdett College in Boston. Following graduation, she went to work in Washington, D.C. for the recently organized, Central Intelligence Agency. She later worked for Pierson and Ball, a Washington Law Firm, and Woodward and Dickerson, International Merchants. She married her husband of 63 years, Robert V. Rourke while in Washington, D.C. in 1954. In 1956, they returned to Maine where Robert V. continued his education. In 1963, she went to work at the University of Maine and retired in 2000 as a Development Officer and Assistant to the Vice President for University Development.

She was director of the Patrons of the Arts, an arts support organization established by Vincent Hartgen and Lloyd Elliott in 1962. She was also responsible for numerous fund-raising projects including the Annual College Appeals and many scholarships. She was a member of the Frances Dighton Williams Chapter, D.A.R., the Penobscot Valley Country Club where she served as Secretary to the Board, the United Methodist Church, the Ellsworth High School Alumni Association Board, where she served as co-chair of scholarship fund raising, and she was a member of several genealogical societies. She co-authored with Charles Candage and published three editions of the Candage Genealogy, then she wrote The Rourke Genealogy, The Parkhurst Genealogy and the MacDougal/Dickison Genealogies.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Nancy Wood. Janet is survived by her husband, Robert V. Rourke of Orono; one son, Robert C. Rourke and his wife Elaine, of Hobe Sound, Florida, one daughter, Tamara Beaulieu and her husband, John, of Westbrook, Maine, and son Clay McDuffie Dulaney of Newport, NC. Six Grandchildren: Robert W. Rourke of Little River, SC; Andrea Lynn Watson of Juno Beach, FL; Tara Jane Beaulieu of Waterbury, CT; Patrick Beaulieu of S. Portland, ME; John H. and William A. Dulaney of Newport, NC. and five great grandchildren whom live in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

A graveside service will be held 11:00am Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Morgan Bay Cemetery on the Cross Road, Surry with Pastor Steve Smith of the Orono and Alton United Methodist Churches, officiating.
