Hampden - Shirley Anne (Ventre) Fontaine, 90, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends, on October 15, 2017. She was born in Boston, MA., April 7, 1927. She graduated from Weymouth High School. Shirley met and married Mahlon Wood, Jr. and they raised three children while operating an adult foster home in Massachusetts. In later years Shirley married George Cobb and he passed away four years later. After his death she was married to Lionel Fontaine until his death. Shirley moved to Maine in 1989 to be close to her children. She worked at the Etna Dixmont School as an Ed Tech, until retiring at the age of 70. Shirley maintained special childhood friendships throughout her life. She moved to Hampden in 2003 to be on the city bus route, however she drove up until her 90th birthday just 6 months ago. Shirley became an active member of the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church. She embroidered altar cloths for the church and hosted weekly luncheons with church members to work on crafts for the Christmas fair and was a member of the prayer shawl group.Shirley was one of the original members of the Bangor Senior Center and enjoyed many hours there with good friends playing cribbage. Surviving are three children, Mahlon J. Wood III and his wife, Carol; Darrell S. Wood and his wife, Lilia; Paulette Diane Matthews and her husband, Bob; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one great, great granddaughter; one sister, Barbara Olsen; nieces and nephews.A service to celebrate her life will be held 1 pm. Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. David Nicol, pastor of the Hampden Highlands, United Methodist church, officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. Those wishing to remember her in a special way may contribute in her memory to the Hampden Highlands UMC, 48 Kennebec Rd., Hampden, 04444.
