John “Bill” Toole

John William “Bill” Toole, passed away December 18, 2017. He was born in Bangor, the son of John B and Esther T. Toole.
Bill graduated from Harvard University in 1947 as a member of the Navy. After serving aboard the ELSM445 in the Atlantic, he resumed his studies of mathematics at the University of Maine, the University of Illinois, and Notre Dame. After teaching at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, N.J., he returned to Maine in 1959, joining the faculty of the University of Maine Department of Mathmetics. He retired in 1989.
Bill had great love for his family, for teaching (being awarded the University of Maine Distinguished Professorship in 1984), for summers spent at Mt. Desert Ferry, at Hancock Point and Prospect Harbor, and for sailing on Frenchman Bay.
He is survived by his wife Beverly of 65 years, two sons, John and his wife Alida of North Falmouth, MA. and Timothy and his wife Jackie of Wellington, FL.
Relatives and friends are invited to call 2 to 4 pm. Thursday, December 21, 2017 at the Orono Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 72 Main St. Orono. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 am. Friday, December 22, 2017 at The Ressurection of the Lord Parish, Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town, followed by the Rite of Committal at Mt. Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
