Dr. Harold “Brownie” Brown, 82, passed away March 18, 2018 at home. He was born in Boston, MA., April 3, 1935 son of Albert H. and Lora H. (Hall) Brown.
Brownie was Professor Emeritus of the University of Maine. He began his career there as a member of the cooperative extension service faculty from 1968 to 1999. From 1985 to 1999 he served as the Maine 4-H Program Coordinator.
Brownie received numerous awards including the Achievement Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents, the Doctor of Public Service Honoris Causa, of Unity College in 1987 and he was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in 2005.
Brownie was a founding member and past president of Sunkaze Stream Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and also the Penobscot Fly Fishers chapter of FFF of which he was presented the Gray Ghost Award in 2002; a life member and past president of the Veazie Salmon Club, a life member of the Eddington Salmon Club and SAM.
After his retirement, Brownie served as chair of the President’s Advisory Council on retirees, a member of the board of the University of Maine Foundation, president of the Maine 4-H Foundation, a founding member and former board chair of the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Bryant Pond, a member of the University of Maine Recognition and Awards Committee, a board member of the LEX America Japanese Exchange, a long time corporator and director of the Eastern States Exposition, West Springfield, MA. and in 2007 was presented the UM President’s Barbara Hikel Award in recognition of outstanding volunteer service to the University following retirement.
He enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. Brownie was actively involved in the Episcopal Church at the local congregational, diocesan and national levels.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Sally A. (Jutus) Brown of Bangor; daughter, Deirdre Lee Frederick of Dedham; son, Mark Huston Brown and his wife, Carol Elaine Brown of Phippsburg; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Services will be private for the family only.
