Obituary for Dr Stephen C. Paul

CINCINNATI, OH and BANGOR - Dr Stephen C. Paul, DDS, 58, from Bangor, Maine, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2018 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he practiced orthodontics. He is the son of Susan (Rapaport) Paul and Dr Irving A. Paul, DDS.

Stephen had a way of giving of himself that made a sweet and long-lasting mark on many people’s lives. It was far reaching. To really know Stephen was to love him, as he was truly, one of a kind. He showed a deep compassion for his patients, as he’d easily make the drive from Bangor to Portland to wait with the family of a patient who needed jaw surgery, as well as being the attending orthodontist for the Passamaquoddy Tribal Government from 1999 - 2005. He enjoyed orthodontics, though it was treating the people that captured his heart. Stephen’s sister, Sharyn Paul Brusie and their two first cousins, Dean Rapaport and Bruce Rapaport have fond memories of playing flashlight tag and various other games in their grandmother’s basement. The free spirited, wild play brought much laughter and indelible good times that helped shape them all. Edna Rapaport, Stephen’s grandmother, held a very significant place in his life. Stephen was a deeply passionate, kind-hearted and intelligent man. His sense of humor was also infectious. As he ultimately became an orthodontist, over the course of his life, he had a wide range of interests. Number one, being his lifetime love for music. He collected an eclectic mix of music from all over the world and deeply enjoyed high end audio equipment, of which only certain ears could fully appreciate the nuances. There’s no doubt he would have made an excellent musical engineer as well. He had that God given talent. As a young boy, he collected stamps, coins and of course, music. In the summers, he attended Camp Jordan on Branch Lake. As a member of the swim team at Bangor High School, Stephen became the state champion in breaststroke. Soon after, he became the lifeguard at Penobscot Valley Country Club. He attended the University of Southern Maine, receiving a BA in Psychology and went on to attend the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, receiving his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. From there, Stephen attended Boston University School of Dental Medicine for their Post-Doctoral Orthodontic Program. He owned and managed an Orthodontic and Craniofacial practice in Bangor, Maine for 24 years and recently was practicing in Cincinnati, Ohio with Dr Khalid Chaudry, DDS. He was a devoted student and loved to learn about life. He traveled to many dental conferences and presented his work in the U.S. and abroad. Photography was also another great passion for Stephen. Stephen’s last gift to the world was as a cornea donor, allowing others to have their own sight.

His best friend since childhood, Dr Joey Boulter, DDS, remembers him with these words, “he was the most loyal and caring person to the ones he loved. For the many that knew and loved him, he will be severely missed.”
